What most visitors need

Most tourists arrive on a visa on arrival. It costs IDR 500,000, it gives you 30 days, and it is single entry: leave the country and come back, and you buy another one. The government’s e-VOA page lists 87 eligible countries, so the first thing to check is whether yours is on that list, because nothing below applies if it is not. Your passport must be valid for at least six months and carry two blank pages.

That is the whole requirement for an ordinary holiday. There is no hotel booking to upload, no bank statement, no invitation letter. The two things that catch people out are assuming eligibility without checking the list, and a passport with five months left on it.

Thirty days is the number to plan against, not the one to hope to stretch. It is enough for the south, Ubud and a week in the east around Amed without moving every second night. The rest of our guides assume that shape.

Buying it online, or at the airport

There are two routes. Online, before you fly, on the government’s e-visa portal at evisa.imigrasi.go.id: you complete the form, pay by card, and the e-VOA arrives by email. Or on arrival, in cash or by card, at the counters at the main airports and seaports.

The airport route is simple and its risk is queueing. The online route is calmer on landing and has one trap the airport route does not. An issued e-VOA must be used within 90 days. Its details cannot be changed once processed, and if what it says does not match your passport, there is no refund — you buy a second one. Check the passport number and the spelling of your name against the passport itself, character by character, before you pay. Card-provider charges sit on top of the IDR 500,000 online.

There is also a paid service that files the application for you, and we earn a commission if you use the one we link to. Be clear about what it is: a private company, not the immigration department, charging a fee on top of the visa. The official portal is free to use yourself and you pay the same IDR 500,000 visa fee either way. The service is worth it if you want someone else to check the details, and pointless otherwise.

The arrival card is separate, and it is free

Everyone also completes the All Indonesia arrival card, which is the customs and health declaration, online within three days before arrival. It costs nothing. The only official site is allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. You get a QR code; keep it on your phone rather than trusting airport wifi. This is not a visa, and a site that wants to sell it to you is not the government.

Extending: the sources contradict each other

This is the part where we will not pretend to certainty, because the government’s own pages do not agree.

An Indonesian immigration office page sets out an online extension: once only, 30 further days, 60 in total. You apply through the same e-visa portal, pay IDR 500,000 again, and submit between 14 days and one day before your current stay expires. You need an onward or departure ticket. After the online application, you attend an immigration office in person within one working day for a photograph, and there is a dress code — shoulders covered, knees covered, closed shoes.

The e-VOA page on the same government portal says something different: that the visitor visa cannot be extended, and directs you instead to apply for an extension of a stay permit at an immigration office. The wording of the two pages cannot both be the plain truth. They may be describing the same procedure under different names, and they may not.

What we would do with that: assume 60 days is the ceiling, apply with more than a single day to spare, and confirm the procedure with the immigration office covering where you are staying before any plan depends on it. Do not book a 55-day trip on the strength of a paragraph on a web page, ours included.

Overstaying costs IDR 1,000,000 a day

That figure is official and flat, per day, and it is charged on departure. A forgotten week is seven million rupiah, and the airport is not the place to discover it.

Beyond the daily fine, a visa agency states that overstays past 60 days bring automatic deportation and a blacklist, and that fines can be settled at immigration offices, airport counters or online. We could not find that threshold in a statute, so read it as what an agency says rather than as the rule. The daily charge is the certain part, and it is enough of a reason to count the days properly.

What this visa does not let you do

A 2025 reclassification moved visa-free entry and the visa on arrival to index A1/B1. That covers tourism, meetings, family visits and medical treatment. It forbids hands-on work. Bali’s own conduct circular for foreign visitors names working or doing business without the proper documents as a prohibition, and Indonesia’s tourism site lists fines, detention, deportation and blacklisting as the consequences of using the wrong visa category.

Where this bites is Canggu, which is full of people on tourist visas who are plainly working. Newer categories exist — a content creator visa and a remote worker visa among them — and there are single-entry and multiple-entry visitor types as well. We are not going to summarise conditions we have not verified. If you intend to work while you are here, in any sense a border officer would recognise, the entry route is a question for an immigration lawyer, not for a travel site.

The tourist levy is not the visa

Readers conflate these constantly, so: the Bali tourist levy is IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor, it is a provincial charge, and it has nothing to do with your visa. You pay it on the official Love Bali portal or app at lovebali.baliprov.go.id and keep the QR voucher. Only that government domain is genuine. Visitors who have not paid can be refused service at attractions, and checks do happen at the bigger sites.

What Amount Note
Visa on arrival or e-VOA IDR 500,000 30 days, single entry
Extension IDR 500,000 30 more days, 60 total — but see the conflict above
Overstay IDR 1,000,000 per day
Tourist levy IDR 150,000 once per visitor, not a visa
All Indonesia arrival card free within three days before arrival

What we would actually do

Check the eligible-country list, renew a passport with under seven months on it, apply for the e-VOA online a week or two before flying, proofread it against the passport before paying, do the arrival card and the levy in the same sitting, and plan for 30 days rather than gamble on 60.

All of this was checked at the time of writing. Fees and rules move, and the extension question is genuinely unsettled between two government pages, so verify the numbers before you pay anything. The map is the part of this site we can promise; immigration policy is not.
